Topic: Administering Trusts and Estates in the Age of Cryptocurrencies

With the rise of blockchain technologies, trustees and other fiduciaries must now navigate complex duties as they pertain to an emerging asset class: cryptocurrencies. This presentation will orient you to some of the key issues to keep in mind when administering trusts and estates, with an eye toward limiting the possibility of litigation and towards leveraging existing tools to ensure that all digital assets are safely and legally marshaled, stored, and eventually distributed.

J.D. Rees is a sixth-year attorney in Sheppard Mullin’s Private Wealth and Fiduciary litigation group. He practices all kinds of commercial litigation but focuses on trusts and estates disputes. He has counseled institutions and individuals in administering trusts and estates and has secured victories for clients both in trials and in pretrial litigation. J.D. is passionate about blockchain and cryptocurrency technology, particularly as it pertains to fiduciaries and their obligations in administering trusts and estates.
